Maban County Member of Parliament or MP in the National Legislative Assembly on Monday disclosed how pigs’ rearing boosts local economy in the northern part of Upper Nile State.
MP David Unyo Demey Kwara said Maban gets a lot of money estimated at 2,000 South Sudanese Pounds per pig sold or family slaughter for hiring community members to dig for one another.
He revealed that Maban uses pigs for paying bride price; describing it an interesting thing as it is only unique to their community in the country.
MP Unyo explained that 2,000 Pounds per pig makes a lot of money for an average family possessing 20 pigs in Maban County.
He added that only three special boars as symbols are paid for a bride in an addition to 20 cows and 25 goats to make complete marriage settlement among Maban people.
Mr Unyo warned compatriots against identifying Maban as Bruun people of Blue Nile in Sudan, asserting that they are South Sudanese located in South Sudan spotted around Renk, Melut, Longusuk and Kurumuk in southern Blue Nile.
He described Bruun as a generalized naming that disassociates Maban from South Sudan.
MP Unyo said Maban are predominant crop growers who mix up economic activities at will, including fishing and cattle keeping.
He lamented that like other areas in South Sudan, Maban relies on weather, exposing it to drought dangers such as looming famine in the country.
