United Nations or UN Resident Representative on Thursday expressed worries about inability to prevent threatening famine in South Sudan, blaming the country’s leadership for protracting man-made crisis.

Toby Lanzer said the single cause for failure to prevent famine would be failure of South Sudan political leaders to resolve crisis.

He added that renowned global donors including UK, US, Norway and nongovernmental organizations like the UN would not fix the country’s crisis, but South Sudan battling leaders have the ability to do so.

Mr Lanzer told journalists that no outsider like himself can reconcile South Sudanese, but all keys to ending conflict, realizing peace and reconciliation lie in the hands of citizens.

The Resident Representative reminded the nation how it struggled for independence with few supporting hands from outside.

The official made the statement during Thursday’s press briefing in Juba about humanitarian situation and ongoing rescue efforts.
