Rumbek Youth Union branch in Nairobi, Kenya elected a female chairperson for the first time since its inception in 1987.
Awut Mayom Agok, a third year student at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa beat Gum Maper by 166 against 164 in a closely contested election.
She told Good News Radio in a telephone interview that she felt grateful to be the first ever lady in the history of the Union and her priority would be to promote peace and unity among Rumbek youths in Kenya.
Rumbek Youth Union has branches in Juba, Nairobi, Kampala, Australia, Canada and the United States.
