The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur or UNAMID took measures to mitigate the impact of Sudan Government security raids in several camps of displaced people in Nyala and the surrounding towns of South Darfur.

In a statement on Friday, UNAMID expressed deep concern after security organs arrested individuals at Al Salam camp on August 5 for alleged possession of illegal drugs and weapons.

It said South Darfur authorities conducted other raids in Otash and Dereig IDPs camps as part of a wider campaign to curb crimes in the state.

The statement added that the raids generated alarm and anxiety amongst IDPs in Kalma camp who are anticipating a similar operation.

UNAMID Joint Special Representative for Darfur Mohamed Ibn urged Sudanese Government to respect human rights.

He told Kalma camp leaders that they took measures to reduce the impact of such security raids on civilians and that they continue to patrol and monitor the situation closely.
