Telecommunication Minister vows to re-hook lost revenues

Telecommunication and Postal Services Minister vowed to correct contract faults and recover mistakenly exempted revenues lost to mobile providers.
 
Rebecca Joshua Okwaci told the National Legislature on Tuesday’s session that she was working hard with the Ministry of Justice to correct contracts’ mistakes to re-hook huge incomes lost to unjustified exemptions.
 
She admitted that her ministry could be the second largest revenue generator after petroleum if she did not inherit mistakes she found there.
 
The Minister told lawmakers amidst applause that a lot of money was still awaiting recovery.
 
Assembly Economy, Development and Finance Committee Chairperson Goc Makuac Mayol presented to the national parliament heavy losses of revenues to telecommunication operators due to exemptions.
 
He cited losses of million Pounds as Personal Income Tax, Sales Tax, Frequency fees, Excise Duty and Business Profit Tax to several operators including Vivacell, Zain, MTN and Gemtel.
 
MP Makuac explained that frequency fee and exercise duty for Vivacell telecommunication operator was zero in the financial year 2013/2014 revenues due to exemptions.
 
He added that government lost business profit tax completely to Gemtel in the same year.
 
The parliamentary committee directed the Finance Ministry to collect revenues from all government and non-governmental agencies as stipulated in Financial Management and Accountability Act 2011.
