UN Peacekeeping Operations Assistant Secretary-General warned that South Sudan is on the point of a humanitarian catastrophe with an expanded internal conflict.

Briefing the Security Council on the South Sudan’s situation on Wednesday, Edmond Mulet urged the international community to ‘caution all parties with one voice on consequences of impeding the peace process’.

He said the warring parties are too slow to resolve the crisis and both sides continue to believe they can achieve through the pursuit of a military option.

Mr Mulet explained that clashes between militia groups continue to intensify causing unimaginable suffering to South Sudanese.

He pointed out that the scale of humanitarian operations in South Sudan now constitutes the biggest aid action and the funding falls far short in the face of overwhelming needs.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the recent killing of five South Sudanese employees of humanitarian non-governmental organizations in Maban County, Upper Nile state and extended his deepest condolences to their families.

He urged relevant authorities to fully investigate the tragedy, calling on all armed forces in the young nation to keep relief personnel and civilians safe from harm.
