The United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS expressed deep concern and condemned the killing of humanitarian worker after clashes between a community militia called Mabanese Defence Force and defecting SPLA soldiers in Bunj, Maban County of Upper Nile State.

In press statement issued on Monday UNMISS said the militia group were moving around the town, approaching humanitarian organizations offices, asking if they have any Nuer employees.

It added that they shot and killed a humanitarian non-governmental organisation’s staff member in the area.

The statement strongly condemned the targeted killing of civilians, calling on the national and state authorities to protect civilians, UN personnel and humanitarian workers, and to restrict the militia before the situation becomes lawlessness.

It said over 125 thousand Sudanese refugees are threatened since they depend on relief and services provided by aid workers.

UNMISS has no military or police presence in Bunj and is concerned about the safety of the UN personnel, humanitarian staff, organizations and IDPs, calling on the militia group to respect UN premises.
