Nearly 600 people died in Darfur region in May, the bloodiest month in more than two years, UN officials said.

Violence in the seven-year-old conflict spiked since the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) left the peace talks in Doha, Qatar, after signing with Khartoum a document promising to halt attacks.

The UN official said there were 491 confirmed and 180 unconfirmed deaths adding that it was the largest death count recorded since January 2008.
