CAFOD’s Country Representative appealed to the international and donor communities to avail support to rescue South Sudanese from the looming hunger.

Jane Andanje in a statement said the fighting forced farmers to abandon their fields and are living in squalid conditions in makeshift camps and that nearly four million people are at risk of severe hunger because food prices rocketed.

She said ‘now is not the time for the world to walk away from South Sudan. The people more than ever deserve our concerted attention and efforts; inaction is not an option.’

Ms Andanje called on the international community and the conflicting parties to redouble their efforts to secure a sustainable, negotiated, peaceful solution.

CAFOD Humanitarian Response Team leader in Africa Christian Modino called for urgent large-scale humanitarian assistance to preposition and deliver food, water and sanitation, healthcare and shelter to those affected.

He appealed to the humanitarian community to support them as they scale up humanitarian response with local Church partners including Caritas Malakal and Don Bosco in Juba.
