Catholic Church in Sudan condemned the death sentence to a Christian woman who was accused of apostasy by the government.

The Vice Secretary General of Sudan Catholic Bishop Conference Boutros Trille Kuku over the weekend told AMECEA Online News that the accusation against the 27 year-old Mariam Yahiya Ibrahim was false.

It said the lady is eight months pregnant appealing to the government to reconsider and let her free.

Daniel Wani said his wife used to be an Orthodox but converted to Catholic before they got married.

The court also convicted Ms Yahiya of adultery and sentenced her to 100 lashes because her marriage to a Christian man is considered void under Sharia law.

Ms Mariam said she was born to a Sudanese Muslim father and an Ethiopian Orthodox mother but her father left when she was six years old and was raised by her mother as a Christian.

She is a Christian, but Muslim authorities still consider her a Muslim.

Muslim women in Sudan are banned from marrying non-Muslims, and children must follow their father’s religion by law while Muslim men are allowed to Marry Christian women by law.
