Oxfam warned that cholera could rise to 50 percent death rate if untreated.
In a statement on Monday Oxfam’s Country Director Cecilia Milan said the outbreak of cholera in Juba demonstrated how urgently funds are needed to respond to the situation.
She added that as rains cut off humanitarian access and increase risk of the spread of disease, more donors’ funding is critical to save lives in the country.
Ms Milan said the confirmation of cholera cases in Juba is a severe reminder of the multitude of risks citizens endure since the conflict broke out in December 15.
She said the international community must act now to prevent the escalation of public health emergency.
The Director attributed the spread of the disease to contaminated water, human interaction and unclean food, saying overcrowded urban camps and settlement areas are at the most risk.
Ms Milan added that prevention and treatment measures for cholera are simple.
