DETAINED JOURNALISTS ACTED WRONG, SAYS MP

A South Sudan lawmaker said the detained journalists from South Sudan TV and radio did wrong to lock up their equipments during GoSS president’s inauguration.

Last month, twelve journalists were detained after they started a strike to reclaim housing allowanced for 2009.

The journalists were accused of sabotaging the inauguration of GoSS president and the first seating of the Southern Sudan Legislative assembly.

Mary Kiden Kimbo, independent MP for Kajo Keji, described the journalists as unpatriotic by going on a strike when the president was sworn in.

Ms. Kiden suggested they should have stopped the strike on the inauguration day.

Ms. Kiden warned that sabotage should be avoided by the media personnel operating in south Sudan.

She added that the freedom of journalists and of other players should not clash.

GoSS caretaker minister for Information, Paul Mayom, told SCR News that nine journalists were still in detention at the National Security Service in Juba.

He added that he was waiting for a detailed report from the security to decide on their fate.

Mr. Mayom noted his concerned about the journalists’ welfare.
