The UN expressed its commitment to work towards a credible and successful referendum on self-determination for South Sudan and Abyei.
UN Deputy Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan, Lise Grande, told SCR News in an exclusive interview that all UN agencies are committed to make the referendum a success come January 2011.
Ms. Grande added that UNDP will support the referendum with the logistics while UNIFEM will work with women to fully engage them in the process.
Ms. Grande added that all organizations that were involved in the preparations for the elections learned a lot and will be able to avoid the mistakes made during the polls.
She added the UN will be more actively involved in the referendum than it was in the elections to make it as credible as possible.
South Sudanese will vote in January next year in a referendum whether to become an independent state or remain in a united Sudan.
