United States Secretary of State has a full agenda on South Sudan in his weeklong visit to Africa to fix measures to prevent further civilian atrocities including genocide in the country.
In Brookings Institution publication in Washington DC, John Kerry would not want to see a repeat of Bentiu and Bor atrocities.
The publication indicated that the secretary needs to jump-start a peace negotiation that would lead to the emergence of institutions of effective governance and security in South Sudan.
The Obama administration recently issued an executive order to impose sanctions involving travel ban and assets freezing, hoping it would create an incentive for President Salva Kiir’s administration and SPLM/A in opposition resistance movement led by Dr Riek Machar to de-escalate the ongoing conflict.
The publication added that the Obama administration is disturbed at the verbal attacks on the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan by Kiir administration.
It called on the UN Security Council to take a firm stance on the attacks, warning President Kiir and others that the attacks could lead to imposition of sanctions.
Media reports say US Secretary of State John Kerry is expected in Juba to meet President Salva Kiir before concluding his visit to the continent.
