The UN humanitarian affairs chief yesterday ended a four-day mission to Sudan aimed at addressing chronic food shortages in the country.

John Holmes voiced alarm over food shortages in south Sudan due to tribal conflicts and delayed rainfall.

Mr. Holmes noted some progress in the Darfur resettlement programme for internally displaced people near Nyala.

On Friday, he hailed GoSS announcement that it reserved 35 million dollars to fight food shortages, despite its earlier pledge to match international donations of 70 million dollars.

The UN estimates that 15 percent of the population of southern Sudan suffers from severe malnutrition, with women and children disproportionately affected.
