United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur or UNAMID Joint Special Representative for Darfur called for dialogue among movements to push forward the peace process.

Addressing Um Jaras Forum in Chad to build consensus to get Darfur armed movements to peace process on Wednesday, Mohamed Ibn Chambas called all parties to commit to dialogue without preconditions and resolve differences through political not military means.

He said suspension of hostilities was essential and that promises to talk cannot inspire confidence if at the same time fighting continues and intensifies.

Mr Chambas expressed concern on the ongoing attacks on civilian villages and internally displaced persons’ camps, describing it an ‘ugly blemish’ to dialogue efforts.

The chief said rebel movements military attacks must stop because they proved incapable of defeating Sudan Armed Forces and only increase the suffering of the people of Darfur.

He called also for an end to inter-tribal clashes which displaced more than 400 thousand persons in 2013 and continue to be a source of death and destruction this year.

The UNAMID head highlighted the need to facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable populations.
