The UN humanitarian affairs chief voiced alarm yesterday about rising tribal violence and food insecurity as he began a tour that takes him to South Sudan and Darfur.

UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes who is in Juba today, explained that the UN is concerned about rising tribal violence, including the use of automatic weapons that killed 30 people and displaced almost 6,000 in Jonglei and Warrap states this month.

He said the humanitarian situation in the region is getting worse due to food shortage and continuing insecurity.

Mr. Holmes warned that the humanitarian crisis in the region could put the referendum at risk.

He revealed that the crisis is affecting women and children in an unreasonable way.
