United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS Force Commander said the pictures circulating on the internet that land mines were among the cargo intercepted in Rumbek, Lakes State were not correct, but were showing canisters for masks.

Major General Delali Johnson Sakyi in a statement on Tuesday said the weapons were not transported secretly.

Major General Johnson admitted that a packing error resulted in several containers with weapons and ammunition being moved by road was a highly regrettable mistake.

He confirmed that the weapons and ammunition seized belong to the Ghanaian contingent to be deployed to Bentiu to protect civilians and facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance.

The Force Commander said UN high delegation from New York and the government would investigate the issue to understand how the error occurred and prevent a repeat of such serious mistakes.

He hopes that the subsequent investigations into the last week’s incident will clarify circumstances which led to the ‘very unfortunate’ incident.
