United Nations Headquarters intends to dispatch a high level investigation team to urgently look into error in weapons transport to the new contingent in South Sudan.

United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS in statement on Thursday said it was the Mission’s policy that during the crisis all arms and ammunition for peacekeeping were flown into respective deployment areas and not taken by road.

The statement clarified that several containers were wrongly labelled and unintentionally contained weapons and ammunition in connection with the transport of the Ghanaian battalion cargo on its way to Bentiu.

The Mission regretted that the Ghanaian troops are part of the surge of UNMISS troops to assist South Sudan and the goods were destined to Bentiu through Rumbek.
