World Health Organization or WHO on Thursday started vaccinating Internally Displaced Persons or IDPs against oral cholera at UN Compounds in Juba Na Bari.

WHO Medical Officer Abdinasir Abubakar told CRN that the vaccination prevents IDPs from potential risks of cholera and other water borne diseases.

He said IDPs at Juba Na Bari were exposed to several dangers due to congestion and poor sanitation.

Dr Abubakar said WHO was prompted to vaccinate IDPs after cholera risk assessment on sanitation, hygiene and nutrition which indicated potential threats.

The Medical Officer advised the masses to take preventive measures of personal hygiene and be vaccinated against cholera and other diseases.

He added that people outside camps were safer than IDPs since their living conditions did not changed.

The Officer said 30 thousand IDPs were already vaccinated since Saturday in Awerial and Mingkaman camps.

Dr Abubakar revealed that IDPs in Juba, Malakal, Bor and Bentiu were at higher risks than others in the country.
