A new rebel faction that broke away from SPLM/A in opposition issued a statement threatening to attack Bahr El Ghazal region.

Presidential Press Secretary Ateny Wek Ateny said the group led by General Gatkuoth Gatkuoth fought government forces in Malakal of Upper Nile State over the week, claiming that he was not a party to the Cessation of Hostilities agreement.

Mr Ateny said General Gatkuoth did not seem to have any political agenda apart from tribal resentment.

The Press Secretary revealed that Chief Negotiator Nhial Deng Nhial was in Juba on Friday to consult with President Salva Kiir on some issues IGAD mediators presented.

Mr Ateny declined to highlight the consultation issues, saying they were too confidential to reveal to the media and the public.

The second phase of peace talks between Government and SPLM/A in opposition remains without agenda as parties continue adjourning it.

The talk is expected to centre on the root causes of conflict and the political resolutions to the crisis.
