United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs or UNOCHA on Tuesday launched an appeal for 1.27 Billion US Dollars to cover humanitarian response to 3.2 million conflict victims up to June.

Humanitarian Coordinator Toby Lanzer told the press on Tuesday in Juba that NGOs and UN agencies require 1.27 billion dollars to operate from February to June to save lives and reduce suffering.

He appealed to the international community to provide more funds for the whole year due to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in South Sudan.

Mr Lanzer explained that the fund was prioritized for food, medicine, shelters and prepositioning of lifesaving supplies ahead of the rainy season.

He added that almost 900 thousand people were displaced from homes and other thousands hurt directly due to hostilities.

The Coordinator observed that people’s sources of revenue were lost and economic activities including cattle keeping, fishing and hunting were severely disrupted.
