Top UN Human Rights official visits South Sudan

United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights is visiting South Sudan from 14 to 17 January 2014 to assess human rights situation in the country, impact of ongoing fighting and identify areas for improvement.
 
Ivan Šimonovic during his four-day mission will meet in Juba with senior government and UN officials, the National Human Rights Commission, the diplomatic community, civil society actors and community leaders.
 
He will also meet the displaced people, conflict victims and detainees in Juba.
 
Šimonovic is expected to travel to Malakal, Bentiu and Bor.
 
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay expressed grave concern over the severe human rights violations taking place daily in South Sudan.
 
The High Commissioner, other UN officials and Human Rights experts also expressed serious concern about the safety of those arrested and detained in unidentified locations.
