UN dispatches Rights Assistant Secretary-General to South Sudan

UN Secretary-General announced on Friday that he would dispatch Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, Ivan Simonovic to South Sudan this weekend to look into cases of rights violations committed by both sides in the conflict.
 
Ban Ki-moon said perpetrators of serious human rights violations would be held accountable, UN News Digest reported.
 
He said UN Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS gathered evidence of violations with 60 international investigators backed by some 30 South Sudanese counterparts.
 
Mr Ki-moon called on President Salva Kiir to release all political detainees to create conducive environment for a successful dialogue.
 
United Nations Security Council renewed its call on all parties in South Sudan to end violence, protect civilians and ease access for relief workers.
 
UN on Friday continued reinforcing peacekeepers and scaling up its humanitarian response to help alleviate the ‘extremely volatile’ situation.
