Doctors working in southern Blue Nile urged the government to come up with policies to curb female genital mutilation in the state to brig down rates of maternal mortality.

Evans Atari, a doctor working in Kumuk hospital, told SRS that the rate of maternal mortality in southern Blue Nile state is very high due to female genital mutilation.

Dr. Atari said the practice is still very frequent in the region.

He added that medical personnel in the hospital manage to repair 60 percent of mutilated genitals’ cases.

Dr. Atari called on the government to train its own medical personnel to fill the gap when NGOs withdraw their services.
