A Lakes State based reporter pocketed 2500 US Dollar for the persecutions he endured at the hands of Security Forces and government agencies while carrying out his duties as a journalist.
Mr. Manyang Mayom writes for both Sudan Tribune and Gurtong websites. He has been in and out of police cells 17 times.A jubilant Mayom told Good News Radio from Juba on a poor telephone line that the Hellman/Hammet Grants award was a sign that the efforts of those who tell facts are being recognized.
Mr. Manyang urged journalists who have a low opinion about themselves to boost it up and forge ahead in their duty, prioritizing the rights of others over their own rights.
Mr. Manyang welcomed the award as a relief of the many tribulations he suffered in line of duty.
He dedicated the award to all those involved in the defence of press freedom and the freedom of the media.
The Hellman/Hammett grants are intended for writers who suffered political persecution while carrying out their duties and are in financial need.
The grants also help focus attention on incidences of repression and censorship, where the exercise of freedom of expression is hindered.
