At least five girls were given as blood compensation to resolve murder cases in Ikwoto County of Eastern Equatoria State.

A 12-year old girl was given to a 40-year old man whose brother was killed by brother in-law over dowry last week, Emmanuel Radio reported.

another girl  was offered as blood compensation last month, two others in the last three months and one early this year.

Ikwoto County Commissioner Peter Lokeng confirmed the incident saying the government rejected girls offered as blood compensation.

He said relatives defied government directives and compensated the deceased with a girl in a secret function witnessed by few people.

Commissioner Lokeng termed the blood compensation illegal, saying the community practice the act without government knowledge.

He threatened that the people who offered the 12-girl year old to the 40-year old man would be arrested to face the law.

Commissioner Lokeng cited a similar incident where a man was arrested in Chahari area for giving out his daughter as blood compensation.

He threatened to punish people who subject innocent girls to suffer over crimes committed by other persons.

Mr Lokeng called for community awareness on child rights in order to eradicate the practice of offering girls for blood compensation.
