The United Nations Mission in South Sudan on Friday morning conducted an aerial assessment to Akobo town and confirmed that two Indian Battalion troops were killed in action by rebels.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Mission said one injured Indian soldier was transported to its medical facility in Malakal.

UNMISS strongly condemned the violence that occurred in Akobo and continues in other parts of the country.

It explained that 43 Indian peacekeepers, six UN police advisors and two civilians of the UN were present at the base.

It added that about 30 South Sudanese sought shelter from the turmoil in areas of Akobo County.

The Mission called on all parties to the crisis to refrain from further violence and seek a peaceful resolution.

The statement said UNMISS was doing everything possible to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the assault on its base and secure its personnel there.
