A hospital built in Gidel, Nuba Mountains, two years ago with an 80-bed capacity, accommodates 200 patients due to lack of other health care facilities in the area.

Rocio Aguignaga, the deputy matron at Mother of Mercy Hospital, told SCR News that there are beds all over the hospital.

The Comboni Sister from Mexico explained that the increase in the hospital capacity is due to quality and cheep services the institution provides and people come from places as afar as Port Sudan.

Sr. Rocio explained that the hospital is understaffed and it is run with expatriate staff: one surgeon, three nurses, one midwife, one lab assistant, one pharmacist and one anaesthetist.

She said the main challenge is to prepare local staff to run the institution.

Sr. Rocio added that the hospital needs urgently a new ward because patients are accommodated in corridors and all free space available.

In 2009, Mother of Mercy Hospital attended almost 18 thousand outpatients, 3000 inpatients and performed 992 minor and major surgeries.
