Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation or CEPO on Wednesday launched the South Sudan Civil Society and Extractive Governance Oversight to assess community organisations’ readiness to participate in the management of the oil sector.
CEPO Executive Director Edmond Yakani told Bakhita Radio that the project would ensure that the public understood power relations at the three levels of government – national, state and county – in using oil revenues.
He said CEPO would implement the project by identifying potential civil society groups and areas in oil producing states, counties and communities.
Nile on Aid of Hope Director George Riak Kuirthoi said civil societies were ready to see that oil revenue was managed well to benefit local communities.
He called on the government to be transparent to people of South Sudan on how the money is used.
Mr Riak said South Sudanese were marginalised by Sudan before independence and their own government should not marginalize them.
Council of States Legislator Nelson Lumata launched the South Sudan Civil Society and Extractive Governance Oversight in Juba.
