UNMISS, the United Nation Mission in South Sudan, Department of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration on Friday graduated 15 representatives from the organized forces after receiving a ten-day training as weapons marking operators.

Head of Bureau for Community Security and Small Arms Control Riak Gok Majok said the 15 agents were trained on small armed and light weapons marking using machines UNMISS bought in South Africa.

He said the 15 graduate are now ready to operate the machines, mark weapons and manage the data at their respective units in the Army, National Security, Police, Wildlife and Prison services.

The official added the UNMISS provided five marking machines which will help to keep the record of the guns in the country.

Dr Gok said the 15 trained officers will teach others at their units how to mark small guns and keep their registry.

He called on partners to help build standard stores that can accommodate the marked guns.

UNMISS head of DDR unit Klem Ryan said the 15 members were trained in weapons identification, safe handling and operating the complex marking machines.

Mr Ryan said the marking of the weapons is also being done in the neighbouring countries of Uganda and Kenya to avoid cross border traffic of guns.

He added that another 35 government weapons marking operators will be trained in 2014.

The training aims at establishing an effective and efficient weapons marking and tracking system in South Sudan.
