The Prison Service carried out four executions in November, two in Juba and another two in Wau.

South Sudan Law Society said in a press statement on Thursday that two men convicted of murder were hanged in Juba on November 12 and another two were executed in Wau on November 18.

The civil society group added that it was unable to obtain specific information about the executions as judiciary officials declined to provide names of the executed and their crimes.

It pointed out it was not clear whether the executed people had access to legal counsel and other constitutional rights.

“The Government should disclose the identities of those executed and make public the details of their trials and convictions,” said Priscilla Nyagoah, advocacy officer of South Sudan Law Society.

She added that the information was necessary to contribute to an informed and transparent national debate on death penalty.

The Law Society said at least 14 individuals were hanged since independence and that there are about 200 people on the death row across the country.

Last December, the Government of South Sudan with 110 other nations voted in favour of a UN General Assembly resolution that called on countries that use capital punishment to stop executions aiming to abolishing the death penalty.
