Defence minister reveals army obstacles over Yau Yau rebels

Defence Minister on Tuesday appeared in the National Legislative Assembly and explained that the army failed to defeat David Yau Yau’s rebels due to lack of roads, logistical inability and scattered pattern of settlement in Jonglei State.
 
Kuol Manyang Juuk said the army could not respond quickly to arrest the security situation due to lack of roads and logistic support including aircrafts.
 
He added that the ministry’s budget caters for salaries and undermes logistical demands.
 
Minister Manyang disclosed that Yau Yau’s rebel group have strike and escape tactics of attack making it difficult to locate or pursue them.
 
He added that the rebels were using the civil population as a shield, posing failure to SPLA in hunting for them.
 
The minister recommended that nationwide peace and reconciliation campaign, disarmament and amnesty validation be pursued to realize total peace, security and development.
 
The national assembly declined to respond to his report and demanded appearance of the Interior Minister Aleu Ayieny Aleu who was reportedly outside the country to explain his role before deliberation on the matter.
