Waste management collective responsibility

Waste management is a collective responsibility of all people in Juba, and not only state and national governments.

This was the statement Juba City Council Director of Planning Hillary Dada Wedarif made during a JICA tour to waste management centres and Juba dumping site on Wednesday.

He said all should be responsible of their waste before the garbage collection team took it from residential areas.

Mr Dada stressed the need of enlightening citizens on the importance of waste management to avoid throwing rubbish into streams that carry them to the River Nile and pollute water.

The Director appealed to the national ministry of Environment to lobby for funds in order for Juba City Council to exert more efforts in waste mismanagement.

Environment Acting undersecretary Victor Wurda Lo Tombe said South Sudan lacks experience, technical training and professionalism to perform well in waste management and environmental conservation.

Mr Wurda appealed to JICA, Japan International Cooperation Agency, to support the country with technical environmental training.
