South Sudan lost its bid to sit in the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council.
The UN General Assembly Tuesday in New York elected Algeria, China, Cuba, France, Maldives, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Macedonia, Viet Nam, Russia, and UK to serve on the rights council.
The 47-member council is an inter-governmental body within the UN system responsible for promotion and protection of human rights around the globe and for addressing situations and make recommendations on human rights violations.
Council members serve for a period of three years and are not eligible for immediate re-election after serving two consecutive terms.
