LAKES GOVERNOR BANS DRINKING DURING WORK HOURS

Lakes caretaker governor banned the consumption of alcoholic drinks between 6:00 am and 5:00 pm on weekdays.

Telar Ring Deng signed a Provisional Order dated May 3, 2010 prohibiting the sale of any liquors in the state from 6:00am to 5:00pm from Monday to Friday and before 11:00 an on Saturday and Sunday, Gurtong website reported.

The order was sent to the eight counties in the state and commissioners were instructed to implement the directive fully.

The ban was met with mixed reactions with some state residents in full support of the order while some businessmen voiced concerns with the new threat to their profits.

Some termed the decision a move to impose Sharia law upon the state residents.

Lakes State has been hit by excess alcoholism, especially among the jobless youth, leading to frequent clashes with security forces.
