The Humanitarian Coordinator strongly condemned the attacks on civilians in Twic East County of Jonglei State on Sunday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Chris Nikoi said humanitarian community stands ready to respond to other eventual humanitarian needs resulting from this violence.

‘We called on the Government of South Sudan to reinforce its ongoing efforts to strengthen law and order and to ensure aid workers continue to have unimpeded access to all areas affected by violence to reach people in need on time”, he said.

Mr Nikoi said immediately after the attack, health organizations mobilized to help those injured in the violence.

He added that the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service or UNHAS evacuated 49 people from Twic East and flew 30 of them to Bor and 19 to Juba for medical treatment.

The UN Mission in South Sudan conveyed its deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the attacks.

Government spokesperson Michael Makuei Lueth on Tuesday said the death toll of the attacks rose to 79 people and many injuries.
