The Abyei Referendum High Committee Chairperson on Sunday predicted that the government of Khartoum will not accept the outcome of the unilateral vote on self-determination.

Deng Alor Kuol told CRN that even though Khartoum would snub the result, the Abyei community will exert pressure through South Sudan’s government and its citizens.

Mr Alor said the Abyei community did not extend an invitation to the Sudanese government because Khartoum does not recognize the referendum.

He added that the oppressors do not surrender rights till they are taken like with South Sudan’s independence.

He added that the African Union was expected to visit Abyei this week.

Mr Alor said that the referendum results will be endorsed by the Abyei Legislative Assembly and the Abyei SPLM Liberation Council.

He added that some state governments from South Sudan promised to endorse the referendum results.

The registration for Abyei Referendum started on Sunday and the vote kicks off on Saturday. The results should be disclosed on October 31.

Last year, the AU mediation team proposed the referendum in Abyei to be held in October for voters residing permanently in the area.

The Sudanese government rejected the AU proposal saying it ignored the eligibility of Misseriya people.
