Four parties from South Sudan are supporting the Abyei unilateral referendum expected to take place on Saturday in the disputed area.
CRN envoy to Abyei Peter Mapuor reported on Monday via mobile phone that representatives from the United Democratic Front, Democratic United Party, United Sudan African Party and National Justice Party went to Abyei on Sunday to support the community referendum.
The team said Abyei’s one-sided referendum is not the first of its kind that took place in the world.
They added that community based referenda were conducted in other parts of the world.
Mr Mapuor said registration for Abyei Referendum took off on Sunday in 29 centres of five counties without incidents.
On Friday, the Ngok Dinka People’s General Conference held in Abyei declared ‘the intent to conduct as a community the Abyei Area Community Referendum in a fair and transparent manner.’
The General Conference nominated a Referendum Commission headed by Judge Monyluak Alor Kuol and a 24-member Abyei Referendum High Committee chaired by Deng Alor Kuol together with a secretariat.
