Khartoum authorities have arrested gunmen suspected of attacking a UN-AU peacekeeping unit in Darfur killing two Egyptian blue helmets.

The UNMAID convoy was ambushed near Katila village on Friday and two peacekeepers died and three were wounded, all from the Egyptian contingent.

Southern Darfur governor-elect, Abdel-Hamid Moussa Kasha, announced yesterday that some gunmen suspected of the ambush were arrested by the police.

Police spokesperson, Mohamed Abdel Majid, told SUNA news agency that he is conducting investigations and collecting data, and hunting out the remaining members of the gang.

The attack brought to 24 the number of UNAMID personnel killed in Darfur since the Mission started in January 2008.
