Abyei residents decided to go ahead with the referendum on self-determination, set up the commission to oversee the vote and the calendar.

Abyei residents met on Friday in a general conference and appointed Molyluak Alor Kuol as the Referendum Commission Chairperson.

Mr Alor told the press on Saturday in Abyei that he was mandated to organize a free and fair referendum exercise by Saturday, October 26.

He added that the voter registration starts on Sunday and the results should be announced on October 31.

Mr Alor said the people of Abyei ran out of patience by the continuous delays of the referendum.

He added that the Abyei community hoped that the international community and both South Sudan and Sudan would respect the referendum outcome.

The five-member Referendum Commission was sworn in on Saturday in Abyei.
