The national government on Saturday declared South Sudan a flood stricken disaster zone after floods hit hard eight states leaving over 150 thousand people in dire need of humanitarian assistance.

Cabinet Affairs minister Martin Elia Lomuro appealed for assistance from friendly countries, Bakhita Radio reported.

He said people were left homeless and without food.

Dr Elia lamented that the independence was meaningless if South Sudanese did not reap its fruits.

The Minister for Gender, Child and Social Welfare Awut Deng Acuil said over 150 thousand people were in dire need of immediate assistance.

She warned that the number would double within the coming days if the rain did not stop.

Ms Awut explained that the hard stricken states include Northern Bahr El Ghazal, Jonglei, Warrap, Upper Nile, Lakes, Western Bahr El Ghazal, Unity and Western Equatoria.

She added that the government contracted six companies to purchase and distribute tents, blankets and mosquito nets.

Ms Awut said insufficient money and inaccessibility of some areas were among the challenges facing the government in rescuing the situation on the ground.

She called on IGAD, UN agencies, international community and other organizations to provide humanitarian assistance to flood victims.
