Yei River County Culture, Youth and Sports Acting Assistant Commissioner revealed government’s plan to develop Yei as national sports city.
Kujo Bennett told Easter Radio on Wednesday that Yei was participating in sports activities both locally and internationally for the last five years.
He urged communities in Yei to release the land needed for sports activities because it would benefit citizens.
Mr Bennett said sports unite youths and keep them busy and safe from criminal activities.
He explained that the department planned to promote two teams from the second class to the first class after the current league of ten teams.
Mr Bennett noted that the football clubs spent nearly three months without competition.
The Acting Assistant Commissioner said the third students’ mini marathon started on Saturday aimed at identifying talented students in athletics to prepare them for national tournaments.
He explained that they selected ten boys and ten girls out of 196 students from eight secondary schools that participated in the competition.
Mr Bennett added that Sudan for Christ Ministry would pay the tuition fee of the selected girls and boys.
He asserted that a boy ran for ten minutes while a girl spent 12 minutes to cover the five-kilometre mini marathon.
