Torit Catholic Diocese Apostolic Administrator called for serious considerations for the social teaching, describing it as a key principle of the Catholic Church.

Monsignor Thomas Oliha made the call on Wednesday during the opening of a three-day workshop at Fr Saturlino Hall in Torit.

He noted that priests and most the lay people needed to understand the social teachings of the Catholic Church.

Facilitator Sister Cathy Arata from Solidarity with South Sudan explained that the workshop aimed at reflecting together with pastoral agents the importance of Catholic social teachings and how it related to local reality.

Sr Arata said the expectation is that each one will take an active role in building justice and peace in the community.

Key principles of the Catholic social teaching are human dignity, community and the common good, rights and responsibilities, options for the poor and vulnerable.

Others are participation, dignity of work and rights of workers, stewardship of creation, Solidarity, roles of government and promotion of peace.

The workshop attracted parish priests, founding members of Caritas-Torit and representatives of parish councillors.
