South Sudan will need recognition and coordinated support from its neighbors to prevent conflict if it secedes as expected in next year’s referendum.
This is the position of Brussels-based International Crisis Group that added in its latest report that it should not be complicated to recognize an independent South Sudan. The report added that neighboring countries should help ensure the referendum is carried out peacefully if the government in Khartoum tries to manipulate the popular consultation on self determination.
It added that if the process is disrupted or compromised, the international community should intervene and concert its response with the African opinion.
