The Government of Southern Sudan says military action is not part of its plans to deal with a renegade general who rebelled and went to the bush with soldiers and civilians after he was defeated in the race for Jonglei governor.
Gen. George Athor Deng one week ago led a rebellion at SPLA Delab Hill Barracks, near Malakal, stole some weapons and went to the bush with loyal soldiers and civilians.
He is demanding the removal of Jonglei governor-elect Kuol Manyang Juuk who beat him at the polls and an amnesty for his soldiers.
GoSS spokesman Paul Mayom Akech told Sudan Radio Service yesterday that the government will not use force against Gen. Athor.
Mr. Mayom added that the government is holding talks with the mutined general.
Colonel Malaak Auyen Ajok, SPLA acting spokesperson, told SCR News on Wednesday that it is up to the political power to decide how to solve Gen. Athor’s crisis although the SPLA had him cornered.
Col. Malaak added that a military solution could cause many civilian casualties since Gen. Athor has non military personnel with him.
