National Health ministry declares polio outbreak

National Health Ministry on Monday confirmed polio outbreak in South Sudanand declared it a national health emergency.
 
The ministry Undersecretary Makur Matur Koryom said in previous week three cases of polio were confirmed in the country.
 
He lamented that the outbreak was a very sad event after the country was declared polio free. 
 
Dr Matur said of the three cases, two were confirmed in Northern Bahr El Ghazal and one in Eastern Equatoria states.
 
He expressed government’s commitment to eradicate polio in the country.
 
The Undersecretary appealed to parents to take their children for vaccination.
 
World Health Organization Expansion Program on Immunization or EPI Team Leader Yahiya Mustafa reiterated his organization’s commitment to support South Sudan in the fight against polio despite challenges facing the country.
 
There are polio emergency campaigns ongoing in Northern Bahr El Ghazal, Warrap and Eastern Equatoria states and the same campaigns would be conducted in October and November in other states.
