Swarms of termites are destroying crops in Eastern Equatoria, a state already hit by severe food shortages.
Director for Plant Protection in Eastern Equatoria state Ministry of Agriculture, Romeo Ojinga Lonyong, told Radio Emmanuel that Magwi is the most affected county by white ants in the state. He said reports indicate that termites have invaded the eight counties of the state.
The white ants destroyed maize fields, Magwi’s main crop.
Mr. Ojinga lamented that sate lacks means to transport technical personnel to fight the pest in the infested areas.
The state Director for Plant Control urged youth in the infested areas to buy pesticides from the ministry to fight the termites since his department does not have means of transport.
Mr. Ojinga urged farmers to use traditional methods and like chilli spray, and dig out ant-hills to prevent further crops destruction.
