Nearly 300 ex-combatants graduate in Mapel

At least 290 ex-combatants including 18 women are graduating today at the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration or DDR Training Centre of Mapel in Western Bahr El Ghazal.  
 
The ex-combatants from Greater Bahr el Ghazal underwent three-month vocational training in agriculture, masonry, plumbing, mechanics and construction, English and simple mathematics. 
 
The training aimed at helping them return to civilian life. 
 
United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS head Hilde F. Johnson, President Salva Kiir Mayardit are expected to attend the ceremony. 
 
Ms Johnson said ‘the pilot phase is a key component of the new South Sudan DDR program and represents an important step in the process of deepening peace and stability in South Sudan.’ 
 
She said the ex-combatants will now begin the process of going back to their states and communities, return to civilian life and participate in building the country.
