SPLA general George Athor said yesterday he had taken command of a number of soldiers and demanded the removal of the Jonglei governor-elect that beat him in the polls.

The SPLA accused Gen. Athor of masterminding an uprising at one of its bases near Malakal on Friday that killed at least eight people.

Gen. Athor denied leading Friday’s attack, saying the soldiers mutinied when they were ordered to arrest him.

The defeated candidate for governor of Jonglei yesterday told Reuters over a satellite telephone link that he moved to a location near the border of Jonglei and Upper Nile state with a number of soldiers.

He did not disclose how many soldiers he commanded.

Gen. Athor declined to give details of his immediate plans but warned he would respond to any provocation from the SPLA.
